The award-winning Mfuwe Lodge, located just inside the South Luangwa National Park, is the starting/ending point for your Zambian odyssey. Its also famous for the herd of elephant that marches through reception each November in search of the fallen fruit from a favorite wild mango tree!

Upon arrival, youll be shown to one of Mfuwes spacious thatched chalets. Following a sumptuous dinner under the stars youll retire for the night and dream of the wonders the following week will bring.

After a restful first night, youll be transported to the first of the two Bushcamps selected for your stay. While each of the six Bushcamps has its own special character and unique dorranging from thatched chalets on the edge of a watering hole, to stilted river treehouses and stylish canvas units beside an oxbow lagoonall of them guarantee an intimate, personalized experience, thanks to accommodating a maximum of 6 or 8 people.

Once in camp, its time to switch your watches to safari time. A typical day begins early with birdcalls and other sounds as the wilderness comes to life. Meander down to the open-air deck for coffee (or tea) and a light breakfast before setting out with your guide and tracker for an interpretive walk or game drive. Youll usually return to camp just before noon for a hearty brunch.

The balance of the day is yours to enjoy as you please. The valley gets warm in the midday sun, making this a good time to chill with a book, binoculars, or both. As the afternoon sun fades, youll head out againeither on foot, in a vehicle or a combination of bothreturning to camp after dark for dinner.

One cant talk about a true African safari without mentioning the time-honored tradition of the sundowner. As its name implies, once the sun starts dipping down for the night, your guide will find a spot to park and then magically produce ice-cold cocktails, beer, wine or soft drinks and an array of tasty snacks.

Talley Ho!

An original watercolor painted by Anne Adams Robertson Massie (1931-2015) depicts a lively scene featuring mounted riders in traditional English hunting garb.

The artists many accolades include the designation of Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society. In 1993 in New York City she received the American Watercolor Societies highest award, the Gold Medal of Honor. She received the Virginia Watercolor Society Best in Show Award in 1992 and again in 1997. Annie studied with Pierre Daura, John Pike, Rex Brandt, Charles Reid, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Alex Powers among others.

Bugeye Ship Model

With this model of the Lizzie J. Cox, built by Dr. Henry Clapp, Jr., dream about the glory years of the Chesapeake oyster industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when bugeyes harvested (dredged) more oysters than any other vessel. (Skipjacks would replace them in them in the early 20th century.) The 67 foot Lizzie J. Cox was built in 1905 at Fishing Island Maryland and her draft was only five feet.

The late (d. 2019) Dr. Clapp was an anesthesiologist, who after retiring from the hospital in Franklin, VA, developed a passion for model ship-building working with the Mariners Museum in Newport News.

Come & experience authentic, unspoiled Africa with The Bushcamp Company in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. You’ll fly into Lusaka International Airport and pick up a local flight to Mfuwe Airport. Bushcamp staff will be waiting to greet you and whisk you to your first stop. The award-winning Mfuwe Lodge, located just inside the South Luangwa National Park, is the starting/ending point for your Zambian odyssey. It’s also famous for the herd of elephant that marches through reception each November in search of the fallen fruit from a favorite wild mango tree! Upon arrival, you’ll be shown to one of Mfuwe’s spacious thatched chalets. Relax and unwind on your secluded veranda, shaded by ebony and mahogany trees, book a spa treatment, or head up to the open-air lounge/bar area. Take your binoculars for the wide array of wildlife—hippo, giraffe, buffalo, antelope and crocodile—that gathers at the lagoon. Following a sumptuous dinner under the stars you’ll retire for the night and dream of the wonders the following week will bring. After a restful first night, you’ll be transported to the first of the two Bushcamps selected for your stay. While each of the six Bushcamps has its own special character and unique décor—ranging from thatched chalets on the edge of a watering hole, to stilted river treehouses and stylish canvas units beside an oxbow lagoon—all of them guarantee an intimate, personalized experience, thanks to accommodating a maximum of 6 or 8 people.

Once in camp, it’s time to switch your watches to “safari time.” A typical day begins early with birdcalls and other sounds as the wilderness comes to life. Meander down to the open-air deck for coffee (or tea) and a light breakfast before setting out with your guide and tracker for an interpretive walk or game drive. You’ll usually return to camp just before noon for a hearty brunch. The balance of the day is yours to enjoy as you please. The valley gets warm in the midday sun, making this a good time to chill with a book, binoculars, or both. As the afternoon sun fades, you’ll head out again—either on foot, in a vehicle or a combination of both—returning to camp after dark for dinner. One can’t talk about a true African safari without mentioning the time-honored tradition of the “sundowner.” As its name implies, once the sun starts dipping down for the night, your guide will find a spot to park and then magically produce ice-cold cocktails, beer, wine or soft drinks and an array of tasty snacks.
